Getting ready for: an indoor day – and possible power outage. My
blankets and books are nested around me.
Completed:
- · My Coursera course Plagues, Witches and War: The Worlds of Historical Fiction. After being disappointed with some of the books in the class, I opened Yangsze Choo’s The Ghost Bride with low expectations. I was surprised. I was delighted. What a wonderful, playful book – perhaps I think of it more as a ghost story, romance and/or fantasy than historical novel, yet it presents rich descriptions of Chinese Malayasian culture. I also found the video interviews with Yangsze informative and charming. I very much like this new author.
- · First book on Kindle. (Ghost Bride) Although I have had my Kindle for nearly a year, I have only used it for audiobooks. I adjusted quite easily to screen, although I haven’t mastered the benefits like word look up, notes and highlighting.
Working on: a
review of Katherine Howe’s The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane.
Reading: Olive
Kitteridge. Didn’t read it when
everybody else did. I did reserve it once at the library and then missed the
call. So now going back.
Considering reading:
Beautiful Ruins, The Goldfinch, Aviator’s Wife
(book club) The Boys in the Boat.
It will be an indoor day here too -- and maybe a possible power outage as we're getting sleet and freezing rain later too. So far, it's clear, but I expect that to change here shortly. Glad you're finally enjoying something from that course. How much did you pay for it again? ;) <-- I think it was free, right? :)
ReplyDeleteYup. That's the appeal. Free classes that you can drop out of at any time. The lectures were great and it was fun to do the class. I would take another. I think one of the problems is that a class designed for undergraduates may not be enticing to more sophisticated readers. In our enthusiasm, we don't think of ourselves that way and forget we've been reading and thinking about reading for a long time.
DeleteNo snow here as yet but it's definitely winter! Thanks for clueing me into a new book -
ReplyDeleteThe Ghost Bride. Have to look for it. Enjoy being cozy indoors with books!

It's been cold and rainy here....and I've been enjoying Netflix and a little reading. I still haven't read Olive Kitteridge, but I do want to read it. Thanks for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteBooks and blankets nestled around you -- lovely image! The two you're working on are two I want to read. Looking forward to your thoughts on them.
